History 2 (Click to select text)
HISTORY In the book, "Prisons We Choose to Live Inside ", Doris Lessing states that " young people are not interested in history" because she believes that a young person does not want to learn about facts that happened in the past. They would rather believe things that are made up by themselves or others, such as a leader. Lessing believes that to the young, history is not worth studying because the actions that are made by the older generation are considered to be "stupid and perennial". It is found that how the young react towards history is a repeating process. No one learns anything about history when one is strong in his or her own beliefs. Lessing says that the young should be taught history because it is essential to educate the young about what has happened in the past and what could reoccur in the future. The younger generation should be aware of the fact that the history that happened in the past could happen again sometime in their lifetime. I believe with Lessing's statement because young people today are not interested in history. I believe that children and young teens think that history is just merely boring facts and do not find any significance behind the historical events that have happened. People who actually find history boring do not realize how much our ancestors have done to get us where we are today. Many also do not recognize the importance of history and how it has evolved. The young should appreciate that history is a part of how the people and events of the past have gained so much freedom for all of America. I particularly never appreciated history. I always thought that it was boring and just facts that I needed to know to pass a class. When I read Lessing's statement and her belief about how the young do not appreciate history, I realized it is true that many of the younger generation do not think about how important history is. I wish when I was younger that I could have appreciated history more. I also believe that history is repeats itself many times but people just do not realize that. Especially throughout my high school years I always thought that history was tiresome. Throughout high school I always considered history as just a subject that was required to graduate. One summer I took world history at a junior college. I didn't want to take it but I needed it to graduate high school. I found the teacher very interesting but the facts and events that he presented were very boring. The teacher especially talked about various people who made a difference in America and tried to gain freedom for those who were treated badly. I never really thought about how important that was because I only thought about the America I was living in now. I just thought how nice it was to be where I am now and not before. I realized later that I should have appreciated more of what my history teacher was trying to express to other students and me. History holds so much that other young people and I did not know. I believe that sometimes it takes a person to experience history to actually understand it. My grandfather went through a lot when he was just around my age. He had fought in World War two. When I was younger he would tell me all sorts of stories when he was at war. Of course I did not understand how he felt and what he meant but when he still tells me the stories today, I get chills down my back and sadness about what war did to many people. When I hear it now, I understand more how the soldiers went to war to offer a better future for one's country. I literally took advantage of the freedom I have here in America along with many others. People do not realize that freedom in our country did not come so easy. Others of the past fought long and hard to make sure that people of today are happy. I believe that everyone especially the young should learn and appreciate history. I always took what I had for granted and not until now, did I realize that I should value those who made a difference in America. Not many people understand the importance of history and not many are interested in it. History is something that can repeat itself and people need to be educated and aware of what can happen again and can be tragic. I believe that we learn history to gain knowledge of what has happened in the past and to try and learn from those mistakes. People just see history as the past and what happened will stay in the past. I know that episodes can happen again if people today are not careful. Not only should one take into consideration how important history is but also understand that freedom is something that was not just given. Lessing made a good point about the younger generation not caring about the history. I can understand how the young would not care for history because I am quite young also. Lessing says that "But it is my belief that it is always the individual, in the long run, who will set the tone, provide the real development in a society." She says that people of the younger generation will set how the future's outcome will be. That is why teachers must get through to students how much history should be valued so that they do not make the same mistakes. Not many people would change their minds about history like I have but to get through a majority of them would make a great difference for one's future. I used to always complain about history because I thought that it was useless for my education. I wondered why it was so important to learn about events that happened in the past and did not concentrate about the future because that is where we were headed. I realized that history can repeat and the young are educated about history to appreciate and understand how life was years ago. History is an important subject to learn because that is what shaped America to be the way it is now. Lessing understands that history is something that is not cared for by the young. As the younger generation sees the older, they think that since they are old they see them as senile but in fact the older generations know much more interesting facts than what the young can give them. Over the course of years, so much has happened and I have learned to appreciate history. There are important people of the past who struggled so that people today can live a better life. I definitely agree with Lessing that the young should learn to appreciate history. Plus, the young will learn the mistakes that were made in the past and with that knowledge they could make an even better future for others. I have learned to appreciate history more than I have ever before. So much was sacrificed to get where people are today. I have also learned to appreciate the freedom I have and my dreams that could come true just because of the people in the past have made it possible. I hope that the younger generation will learn to appreciate history more so those mistakes that were made in the past will not happen again.
